Sofie and Steve
Mark Carmody promised on ABC television's weather forecast that Sofie would have perfect weather for her wedding to Steve, and to his credit he delivered.
There were loads of great features to this wedding .. a beautifully turned out bridal party, cool cars, a classy reception venue and loads of champers. Everyone had a great day.

Emily and Ash had perfect weather for their ceremony at the Hobart Botanical Gardens at the weekend. This was my first Hobart wedding and allowed me to catch up with old friends while in town. I love my job :)

The Old Stonehouse at Bungendore is a lovely location for weddings. The gardens looked a treat and provided a gorgeous setting for Belinda & Bruce's wedding photos.

Evan & Jemma
Now, have I thought of everything?
I'm sure customers think you just grab your camera and jump into you car on the morning of a wedding, but in reality there is heaps of preparation and planning involved.

More blossom
The bees are making the best of the newly emerging Canberra blossoms.
They can be tricky to photograph when they move quickly from flower to flower, but this fellow sat still long enough for me to focus on him.

Blossom
The trees in Canberra seem to have decided that it's spring time. There's lots of blossom in our parks and reserves making photo walks very rewarding.

All the best for the birth folks.

Lukey
How cute is little Lukey in his beanie?
Here he is wishing he could run around on the back lawn chasing soap bubbles with his big sister.

Blue Wren
I had a great holiday last week on a Murray River house boat. The bird life on the river was amazing.
These little Blue Wrens would visit us every afternoon to investigate the wood we had gathered for our campfire.

Abigail & Kylie
Photographing babies is lots of fun - as long as you remember that the baby is in charge of scheduling.
You have to adjust your shots to whatever mood baby is in. You will not get nice shots if the baby is hungry or needs a change so you have to take a break to allow until baby is feeling contented.

Lily
I had a great time today photographing Lily and her brother. Gorgeous kids.

Move over
I'd hoped to get some snow shots at Tidbinbilla, but the snow was too high to reach in the few hours I had available to me.
It's hard to be disappointed though - Tidbinbilla is never short of amazing photos.

Skeletal Leaf
I had a great morning taking shots out at Tidbinbilla yesterday. The light shining through the skeletons of these leaves was delightful.
Click through to see this on Flickr, then click it again to see the full size image. The filigree edging of the holes in the leaves is gorgeous.

Another Rail Bridge
Once again the repeating pattern made by the supports of this rail bridge give the shot a pleasing symmetry. The narrow depth of field and the frame formed by the outermost supports both draw the eye into the shot.

Stony Creek Rail Bridge
This wonderful old railway bridge is near Nowa Nowa on the railway line that has been transformed into a bicycle track. Unfortunately the bike track goes around the bridge rather than over it - although maybe that's a good thing given the lack of railings.
It's hard to take a bad shot of a feature like this. The repeating patterns made by the trestles look good from just about any vantage point.

Nowa Nowa Caravan Park
Nowa Nowa Caravan Park has a great little antique store. I've given this photo the treatment in Photoshop to try to give it some of the olde worlde charm that the shop exudes.

Making Us Think Together
I have the honor of having been featured by the Making Us Think Together web site as their photographer of the month.
It is certainly rewarding to have my work complimented in this manner!
In their own words, the website provides :
"The opportunity for four individuals who stand out in their respective areas to be featured and promoted each month."

Nowa Nowa Sculpture Walk
I love Photoshop.
I copied this photo to 2 layers, then tweaked one to get the background the way I wanted it and the other to make the rusty figures look nice, then finally I blended the two layers together.

Jamie and Mel
I had a great time conducting a photography tutorial with some interesting clients who are sharpening up their photography skills prior to going to the U.S.A. to do some tornado chasing. I can hardly wait to see the images they come back with!

What're you lookin' at?
There are lots of ways you as a photographer can encourage people to look at just the part of a photo you want them to look at.
This scene had lots of distractions such as cars in the background and a number of people doing different things. However by getting low so that the kayaks draw the viewers eye in to the central person, and by framing that person with lots of empty sky, the viewer can't help but look at the intended face.

Tuggeranong, Canberra
You have a digital SLR camera (tick). You have a tripod (tick).
Do you also have a shutter release cable? No? GET ONE!!!
For only a few $$$ on ebay you can get a cheap as chips cable release. Once you have one, set your camera to "B" mode (bulb mode), put you camera on your tripod and wait for it to get dark. Point your camera at a city scape or the stars, then just press and hold the shutter open for a while.
How long? Experiment! This exposure was 12 seconds.

Jacki
Retouching faces is a tricky business. A magazine might prefer skin that looks like a plastic doll and is clearly air brushed. Another client might prefer a more natural look such as the one I've tried for in this photo.

Balinese Temple?
No, it's not a statue at the gates to a temple in a steamy tropical garden somewhere in South East Asia. In fact, it's a 6 inch high garden ornament!
By laying on my belly to take this shot I not only made the ornament look larger than life, but I was able to use the fern plant at the back of the garden into a great background.

Shells
I try to keep my eyes open for pleasing patterns - naturally occurring repetition on a theme. Once I spotted these shells I zoomed in and out, and panned back and forward until I I found the composition agreeable.

Yarrangobilly Caves
Trying to take nice photos while on a guided walk in limestone caves is tough. There is typically little room to move and frame shots, using tripod is impractical with so many people and so little space, and you need to move at the same speed as the rest of the group. Hopefully I'll get the chance to take shots -without- those constraints one day.

Grass
My partner Julie took this great shot recently at Broken Hill. Great use of back lighting and the stunning deep blue sky to show the grass seeds off to best effect.

Another baby in the family
I'm now the proud owner of the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. I'm looking forward to playing with this baby, and will post some of the resultant photos in a few days time - once I manage to get my wife to let me have a turn with it!

How to change Depth of Field
Depth of Field, originally uploaded by Ian Champ Photography.
Here's a series of photos that show the variation in depth of field by taking the same shot several times but changing the aperture for each shot.
At f 32 the iris hole is tiny and less light gets in. This gives you plenty of depth of field.
As the iris hole gets bigger (that is, the f number gets smaller) more light gets in - AND you get much less depth of field.
In this series of shots the "brightness" of the shots is kept more or less the same by speeding up the shutter speed as the hole in the iris gets bigger (bigger hole for the light to get in, but open for less time).

Clontarf Rolling
I got to try out a GoPro Hero waterproof camera yesterday. It's not the world's highest resolution or highest quality video/still camera, but it does what it aims to do very well. It's easy to use, it's well and truly waterproof and it's unobtrusive once you put it on and hit record.

Repetition
Keep your eyes out for repeating patterns, both natural and man made. Repetition is pleasing to the eye and what we typically rush past every day can look stunning when frozen in a photograph. I have this image as my PC wallpaper - it looks terrific blown up large on my monitor.

Rebel
Meet Rebel, a gorgeous Miniature Fox Terrier. When photographing pets take the time to immerse yourself in their world. To help viewers of your shots feel they have stepped into the animals private life, get your camera down to their eye level.
